W arning!
The B abySm art™ Airbag
Deactivation System will ONLY
w ork with a special seat d e­
signed to operate w ith it. It will
not w ork with seats w hich are
not B abySm art™ com patible.
N ever place anything between
seat cushion and child seat
(e.g. pillow ), since it reduces
the effectiveness of the
deactivation system .
Follow the m an ufactu rer's
instructions for installation of
special child seats.
The passenger side front
a irbag w ill not deploy only if
the E53 indicator lam p rem ains
illum inated.
Please be sure to check the
indicator every tim e you use
the special system child seat.
Should the light go out while
the restraint is installed, please
check installation. If the light
rem ains out, do not use the
BabySm art™ restraint to trans­
port children, or o th e rw is e -
do not transport child
restraints on the front passen­
ger seat until the system has
been repaired.

A fter turning electronic key in
steering lock to position 1 or 2, the
S 3
indicator lamp located on
center console com es on for
approx. 6 seconds.
If the lam p should not com e on or
is continuously lit, the system is not
functioning. You m ust see an
authorized M ercedes-Benz dealer
before using any child seat.

S upplem ental R estraint System
(SRS)
The term Supplem ental Restraint
System m eans that airbags are
intended as a supplem ent to seat
belts. A irbags alone cannot protect
as well as airbags plus seat belts in
im pacts for w hich the airbags were
designed to operate, and do not
afford any protection w hatsoever in
crashes for which the system is not
designed to deploy.
The SRS uses tw o crash severity
levels (thresholds) to activate
either the ETR or airbag or both.
Activation depends on the direction
and severity of the impact, exceed­
ing the thresholds and fastening of
the seat belt.
Seat belt fastened
first threshold exceeded:
ETR activates
second threshold exceeded:
airbag also activates
Seat belt not fastened
first threshold exceeded:
airbag activates, but not ETR
