M8 Sensor Settings Management Application Reveals Serial Number and Versions

If you know a sensor's IP address, you can open the M8 Sensor Settings Management web
application ("Managing the Sensor" section starting on page 38), which lists the sensor's
complete serial number in the footer of each web page (Figure 27). In addition, the Versions
tab (page 56) lists the versions of various software components involved in the M8 sensor.

Terminal Command Reveals Serial Number and IP Address

You can also find the sensor on the network as follows:
1. Open a terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T) and execute the following commands (after the
Ubuntu
prompt sign), where x.x.x is the subnet the sensor is connected to.
$
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install nmap
$ sudo nmap -sn x. x. x. 0/24 | grep D4:C9:B2 -B2
2. The network search results (Figure 21) list the MAC address of each sensor, starting with
the D4:C9:B2 sequence and ending with the last six digits of the sensor's serial number.
Those digits are printed on the hardware sticker without the leading zeroes (e.g., 137D
in Figure 20 and Figure 21). When you confirm that the sensor is listed, you are assured
that it is properly connected to the network.
3. Look two lines above the sensor's MAC address to find the IP address of the sensor
you were looking for (e.g., 10.0.0.2 in Figure 21).
4. Execute the following command to confirm that there is communication between the
host computer and the sensor. (The
Figure 21).
$ ping sensor_ip_address
