BEARING
PRELOAD ADJUSTMENT
After tightening the nut to specification using
the old shims, rotate the drive
gear
several
turns
in both directions to seat the bearings.

Use the special tools,
@
through
@ ,
to measure
the torque necessary
to
turn the gear. This is
the
bearing preload.

If the bearing preload is not within specification,
the shims between the bearings must be changed.
Refer to the table below and make appropriate
adjustments, repeating the preload checking pro-
cedure as necessary.

NOTE:
Whenever the preload is checked after a shim
change,
and the gear
must be
rotated in both
directions to seat the bearings after the nut is
retorqued to specification.
