VELOCITY MADE GOOD (VMG)
The speed by which the vessel is moving in the upwind directio
When tacking, the optimization should be based on VMG (assun
ing that TWD is expected to be fairly constant). See als
WAYPOINT CLOSURE VELOCITY.
VHF
Very High Frequency - A set of frequencies in the MHz region.
VISIBLE SATELLITE
A satellite whose orbit has placed it above the earth's horizon (e
evation angle >0°) from the location of the navigator and is, ther
fore, available for acquisition. The navigator will not use satellite
with an elevation angle
<
5°.

See VELOCITY MADE GOOD.

WAYPOINT
A point, usually along the track of the vessel or vehicle, who;
position coordinates may be stored in the navigator. The poir
position is the basis for the heading, range, heading-to-steer, esti
mated time of arrival, and steering display calculations.
WAYPOINTCLOSURE VELOCITY (WCV)
The speed the vessel is moving in the direction ofthe next waypoin
WCV should be used for optimization in cases where TWD is ex
pected to vary drastically before the waypoint is reached. See als.
VELOCITY MADEGOOD.
WAYPOINT PASS CRITERIA
The criterion by which the navigator determines the passing of,
waypoint. The criterion is selected in CFG 1, Navigation.
