TIP:
Mark the trim tab 2 with an identification
mark a at the area shown, and then remove
it.
3. Install the water inlet covers 1 and trim
tab 2, and then tighten the water inlet
cover screw 3 and trim tab bolt 4 to the
specified torques.
Water inlet cover screw 3:
1 N·m (0.1 kgf·m, 0.7 ft·lb)
Trim tab bolt 4:
42 N·m (4.2 kgf·m, 31.0 ft·lb)
4. Place the lower unit in water, and then
start the engine.
5. Check for water flow at the cooling water
pilot hole. If there is no water flow, check
the cooling water passages inside the
outboard motor.
Inspecting idle speed
1. Start the engine and warm it up for 5–10
minutes.
2. Check the engine idle speed using the
Yamaha genuine tachometer (on-board
meter) or the YDIS. To connect and
operate the YDIS, see the "YDIS (Ver.
1.33 or later) Instruction Manual."
Changing engine oil
The engine oil should be extracted using an
oil changer.

Maintenance
Change the engine oil after the first 20
hours of operation or 3 months, and every
100 hours or at 1-year intervals thereafter.
1. Place the outboard motor in an upright
position. NOTICE: If the outboard
motor is not level, the oil level indi-
cated on the dipstick may not be cor-
rect.
2. Start the engine and warm it up for 5–10
minutes.
3. Stop the engine and leave it off for 5–10
minutes.
4. Remove the top cowling.
5. Remove the oil filler cap 1. Remove the
dipstick 2 and extract the engine oil
using the oil changer 3.
