PROFINET Distributed IO

The focus of PROFINET IO is to have cyclic data exchange between a controller and multiple often
simple communication devices. The aim is to have high performance and ease to use.
The PROFINET IO distinguishes the following different device roles. Please note a single device can
have multiple roles.

PROFINET
Device that addresses the connected IO units by exchanging input and output
signals with them.
This controller normally runs the automation program.
Device (e.g. a PC) for commissioning and diagnostics.
Network infrastructure.
Device for operating and monitoring the functions of the system.
Device for receiving sensor signals and controlling actuators like valves,
switches and frequency converters.
