Explanation, example
The IP subnetwork address is also referred to
as subnet mask. Value 255 masks the address
part (byte) at the corresponding location (byte
value remains). Value 0 does not mask, i.e.
values 0...255 can pass.
The IP subnetwork address 255.255.255.0
masks IP address 192.168.251.1 as follows:
192.168.251
=> Network number
192.168.251.x => Computer number 1 to 254
(0 and 255 not allowed)
Computer numbers 1 to 254 can be used to
address the network components:
Web server:
Default gateway (switch): 192.168.251.2
Default gateway (router): 192.168.251.3
Network address structure permitting, default
value 192.168.251.2 can be assumed.
Several gateways may exist on a network.
The IP address is then e.g. 192.168.251.x
(x = 3, 4, ...).
The following terms are used in this document:
"Switch" => Default gateway in a LAN as
coupling element for various network
components or network segments (segments
within same LAN).
"Router" => Default gateway as coupling
element for various networks, e.g. LAN with
Internet.
The DNS server (domain name system) on the
Internet connects a globally valid name to a
domain with an IP address (e.g. domain
www.siemens.com
with IP address
192.138.228.1).
The setting value corresponds to the DNS
server's IP address, with the name (domain) and
IP address of the central communication unit
entered as web server.
You must define DNS server 2 only in redundant
systems.
