9) To record leg EMG, use disposable adhesive electrodes or cup electrodes
with conductive adhesive paste. In accordance with AASM recommenda-
tions, two electrodes are placed longitudinally and symmetrically in the mid-
dle of the anterior tibialis muscle so that they are 2-3 cm apart or 1/3 of the
length of the anterior tibialis muscle, whichever is shorter (Fig. 50). As far as
the maximum EMG amplitude of patient staying at rest should not exceed
100 µV. Degrease the patient's skin using an alcohol wipe prior to electrode
placement. Secure the positioned cup electrodes with medical tape or adhe-
sive paste (in case of excessively hairy areas). If adhesive paste is used,
cover the electrode with gauze pad square moistened with the paste and
then push it tightly to the electrode. Let the pad dry out. Plug the positioned
electrode cables to the electronic unit inputs in accordance with the montage.
When the testing is completed, remove the paste remains with warm water.
