3.2.2 EP Testing (Using Neuron-Spectrum.NET
Software)
With the Neuron-Spectrum.NET software the digital system can record, store and
analyze long- and middle-latency EP of different modalities: flash and pattern reversal
visual evoked potentials, auditory EP, cognitive EP (P300, P50, CNV, MMN,
GoNoGo), long-latency somatosensory EP and readiness potentials (using the patient
button).
To perform EP testing, follow the steps:
1. Make sure all required stimulators are connected to electronic unit or auditory
stimulator unit.
2. Other steps are as described in section 3.1.
3. Prepare a patient's skin. To obtain the reliable results during EP test, the lower
impedance values in comparison with the ones used for routine EEG tests are
needed. This is due to the lower amplitude of the signal being recorded and the
necessity to perform the sufficient number of averagings. That is why prepare pa-
tient's skin more carefully:
1) degrease the patient's skin prior to electrode placement with an alcohol wipe;
2) prepare the patient's skin using the abrasive paste till slight reddening and
remove paste remains with a wipe moistened in the saline solution.
4. Prepare and position the required electrodes. The cup electrodes preliminary filled
in with conductive adhesive paste; the disposable adhesive electrodes or bridge
electrodes can be used as recording ones.
Use the required electrode system (for example, the international 10-20 electrode sys-
tem, see section 3.2.1).
The preparation of bridge and cup electrodes is described in section 3.2.1. Use
a medical tape to secure the cup electrodes beyond the hairy part of the head.
If disposable electrodes are used, remove the covers and position them on
the patient's skin using the adhesive and conductive gel layer of an electrode.
When a disposable electrode with a "button" connector is used, plug the electrode ca-
ble in the electronic unit input. If a disposable electrode without a "button" connector is
used, plug the electrode in the electronic unit using the cable with an "alligator" con-
nector.
5. Bundle the cables together to avoid the big cable loops that may increase
the noises.
6. Position the required stimulators on the patient.
