GTIN – global trade item number can be used by a company to uniquely identify all of
its trade items. GS1 defines trade items as products or services that are priced, or-
dered or invoiced at any point in the supply chain.
To ensure automatic data reading the GS1-128 code is integrated to the barcode in
DataMatrix format (Fig. 19).

DataMatrix code is a two-dimensional barcode, consisting of black and white "cells" or
modules arranged in either a square or rectangular pattern. The DataMatrix code is
described in ISO/IEC 16022:2006 standard.
To decode the information about the item DataMatrix code can be read by a scanner
or a smartphone camera as a two-dimensional image.
