Expansion Shelf Components

An expansion shelf increases the storage available to an array. HPE Nimble Storage HFxx arrays support the ES3 expansion
shelf. HPE Alletra 5000 arrays support the Alletra 2120 expansion shelf. The shelves include the chassis, two controllers, two
I/O units with cooling fans, two power supplies, three to six SSDs for cache, and 21 HDDs for data.
The Adaptive Flash Array supports up to six expansion shelves. Each shelf has two I/O units called expanders. Like the
controllers in an Adaptive Flash Array, expanders are replacable in the field.

Expansion Shelf Front Panel

The front bezel snaps on and off, exposing or hiding the drives within the expansion shelf chassis. During normal operations,
the bezel should remain in place.
The following figure shows the slot designations for the ES3 expansion shelf. Note that the Dual Flash Carriers (DFCs) for
SSDs each have two slots, one for drive A and one for drive B. The SSDs in the expansion shelf should be populated in bank
A slots first.

Expansion Shelf Rear Panel

The rear of the expansion shelf includes the expanders and power supplies. Data and power cabling are done at the rear of
the shelf. The array manages the expansion shelf through the SAS expansion cables. There are no network connectors on a
shelf. The rear components are the same regardless of the model.
