Turn on low beams as evening approaches or in conditions of
poor visibili t y. •

In the "AUTO" position lig ht sensors switch the head and
tail lights on and off.

Activating
- Tur n t he light switch=> fig. 43 to pos ition
AUTO.
Deactivating
- Tur n t he light swi t ch to posit ion 0 .
In t he switch position AUTO t he automatic head - and tai llight
control is activated . The corresponding
symbol on the light switch
is lit .
With automatic head lights, t he high-beam func t ion is also avai lab le,
but with one restriction: If you have not switched the high beams
back to low beams during automatic headl ight operation (for

examp le, after driving through a tunnel), only the low beams come
on t he next time automa t ic headlights are sw itched on . To use t he
high beams, you first have to pull the high beam lever back and then
push the lever fo rward again .
The side marker ligh t s and headlights can be switched on manua lly
using the light switch ~ page 54.
Light sensors located in the inside mirror housing and ste m
constantly check the light conditions surrounding
the vehicle . If
amb ien t brightness falls below a factory set value (e.g. when driving
into a tunnel), the head - and tailligh t s inc luding the license plate
il lumination are automat ically turned on . When ambient brightness
increases again, the external lights are turned off aga in~ & .
Light
sensor
malfunction
If there is a light sensor ma lfunction, the symbol - comes on in t he
display . For safety reasons, the low beams are turned on p erma -
nently with the switch in AUTO. However, you can continue to turn
the lights on and off using the light switch. Have the light sensor
checked as soon as poss i ble at an authorized Audi dea ler.

WARNING
Autom ati c head - and t aillight control is only inte nded to assist
the driver. This feature does not relieve the driver of his responsi-
bility to check the headlights and to tu rn them on manually
according to the current light and visibility conditions . For
example , fog and rain cannot be detected by the light sensors.
Consequentl y, always sw itch th e headlights

on under the se
weather condition s and when driving in the dark .
Crashes can happen when you cannot see the road ahead and
when you cannot be seen by other motor ists.
Always turn on the headlight s so that you can see ahead and
so tha t oth ers can see your car from the back.
