Tire pressure generally refers to the amount of air in a tire that it
needs it to do its jo b and safe ly carry t he combin ed load of th e entire
vehicle and its contents . Tire pressure is measured in kilopascals
(kPa), t he int ernationa l measu ri ng unit and in po u nds per sq uare
inch (PSI). Tire pressure is based in part on the vehicle's design and
load li mit - the g reatest amoun t of weight that the vehic le can carry
safe ly and the tire size. The p roper t ire pressure is frequently
referred to as the "recommended cold tire inf lation pressure." Air in
the t ires ex pands when the t i re h eats up because of interna l friction
when it flexes in use. The tire pressure is higher when the tire has
warme d up t han whe n it is "co ld." It is the infl ati on pressure in a
"cold" tire that counts. Therefore, you should never let air out of a
war m t ire t o match "co ld ti re inflati o n press u re" recommenda t io ns.
The tires wou ld then be underinflated and could fail suddenly.

Ma intaining proper t ire pressure is one of the most important
t hings yo u can do t o help avoid sud d en tir e f ailu re. Underinfla t ed
tires are a major cause of sudden tire failure. Keeping tires at the
r ight pres su re is also impo rt ant for safe and responsive vehicle
handling , traction, braking and load carrying. Tire pressures are
particularly important when the vehicle is being driven at higher
speeds, and then especially when heavily loaded even within the
permissible load-carrying capacities approved for your vehicle.
