Changing the oil at the recommended interva ls is so very important
because the lubricating properties of oil decrease gradual ly dur ing
normal vehicle use . If you are not sure when you have your oil
changed, ask your authorized Audi Service Advisor.
Under some circumstances the engine oi l shou ld even be changed
more frequent ly. Change oi l more often if you drive mostly short
d istances, operate the vehicle in dusty areas or mostly under stop -
and-go traffic conditions, or when you use your vehicle where
t emperatures stay below free zing point for long per iods .
Detergent additives in the oi l wil l make fresh oi l look dark after the
engine has been run ning for a short time . This is normal and is not
a reason to change the oi l more often than recommended.
Damag e or malfun ct ions due to lack of mainten ance
It is essential that you change your oi l at the recommended interva ls
using on ly engine oil that complies with Audi oil standard
VW 502 00. Your Limited New Vehicle Warranty does not cover
damage or ma lfunctions due to fai lure to fo llow recommended
maintenance and use requiremen t s as set forth in the Audi Owne r's
Manual and Warranty & Ma intenance book let. Your authorized Aud i
dea ler wi ll have to deny warranty coverage unless you present to the
dea ler proof in the form of Serv ice or Repair Orders that all sched -
u led maintenance was performed in a timely manner . •
Engine
oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an adequate
amount of oil to lubricate and cool all of its moving parts.
In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal
engine components, all internal co m bustion engines consume a
certain amount of oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine
and may change sign ificantly over the lif e of the eng ine. Typically,
engines with a specified break -in period (see=> page
172)
consume
more oil during the break -in period than they co nsume afte r o il
consumption
has stabi lized.
Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption
depends on
t he quality and viscos ity of the oil, the RPM (revo lutions per minu t e)
at which the engine is operated, the ambient temperature and road
conditions . Further factors are the amount of oil dilution from water
condensation or fue l residue and the oxidation level of the oil. As
any engine is subject to wea r as mi leage builds up, the oil consump -
tion m ay increase over t ime unti l replaceme nt of worn components
may become necessary.
With all these var iables com ing into p lay, no standard rate of oil
consumption can be established or specified . There is no alternative
to regu lar and frequent checking of the oil level, see Note.
If the yellow eng ine o il level warn ing symbo l in the instrument
cluster ~
lights up, you sho uld top off 1 quart (1 lite r) oil

Tips
If you have the impression your engine consumes excessive
am ounts of oil, we recom m end t hat you consu lt your authorized
Audi dealer to have the cause of your concern proper ly diagnosed .
Keep in mind that the accurate measurement of o il consumpt ion
requires great care and may take some time . Your authorized Audi
dea ler has instructi o ns about how t o measure oi l cons umpt ion
