properly
Airbags are only supplemental restraints. For airbags to
do their j ob, occupants must always wear their safety
belts properly and be in a proper seating position.
For your safe ty and the safety of your passengers, before
driving off, always:
- Adjust the driver's seat and steering wheel proper ly
=> page 110,
- Adjust the front passenger's seat properly=> page 111,
- Wear saf ety belts proper ly=> page 120,
- Always use th e proper child restraint to pr otect children
pr o per ly:::> page 149.
In a co llision, airbags must infla t e within the blink of an eye and with
considerab le force . The supp lementa l airbags can cause injuries if
t he driver or the front seat passenger is not seated properly. There -
fore in order to help the airbag to do its job, it is important, both as
a d river and as a passenger to sit prope rly at all times.
By keeping room between your body and the steering whee l and the
front of the passenger compartment, the airbag can inflate fu lly and
completely and prov ide supplementa l protect ion in certain frontal
col lisions => page 110, " Proper occupant seating positions". For
detai ls on the operation of the seat adjus t ment contro ls => page

It's especially important that children are properly restrained

Safety first
There is a lot that the driver and the passengers can and must do to
help the individual safety features insta lled in your Audi work
together as a system .
Proper seating position is important so that the front airbag on the
driver side can do it s job. If you have a phys ical impairment or
condition that prevents you from sitting properly on the driver seat
with the safety belt properly fastened and reach ing the pedals, o r if
you have concerns with regard to the function or operation of the
airbag system, please contact your authorized Audi dea ler or quali -
f ied workshop, or call Audi Customer CARE at 1-800-822-2834 for
possible modification
to your vehicle.
When the airbag system deploys, a gas generator wi ll fill the
airbags, break open the padded covers, and inflate between the
steering whee l and the driver and between the instrument pane l
and the front passenger. The airbags wil l deflate immediate ly after
deployment so that the front occupants can see through the wind -
shie ld again without interruption .
All of this takes p lace in the blink of an eye, so fast that many people
don't even realize that the airbags have dep loyed. The airbags also
inf late with a great deal of force and nothing should be in their way
when they d ep loy. Front airbags in comb ination with proper ly worn
safety belts slow down and limit the occupant's forward movement .
Toget her they help to prevent the dr iver and fro nt seat passenger
from hitting parts of the inside of the vehicle while reducing the
forces acting on the occupant du r ing the crash. In this way they help
to reduce the risk of injury to t he head and upper body in t he crash.
Airbags do not protect the arms or the lower parts of the body .
Both front airbags will not inflate in all fronta l coll isions. The tr ig-
gering of the airbag system depends on the vehicle dece leration
rate caused by the co llision and reg istered by the electronic contro l
unit. If this rate is below the reference value programmed into the
control unit, the air bags will not be t riggered, even thoug h the car
may be bad ly damaged as a result of the collision . Vehic le damage,
