fig. 125) lists the specifications
of the original equipmen t tires
insta lled on your vehicle at the time it was manufactured .
Federa l law requires tire manufacturers to place standardized infor -
mat ion on the sidewall of all t ires::::> page 218, fig. 127. Th is informa -
tion identifies and describes the fundamenta l characteristics, the
qual ity grade of the tire and also provides a t ire ide nt if icat ion
number for safety standard certification
and in case of a recall.

Knowledge of tire specifications
makes it easier to choose the
correct t ires. Radial t ires have the t ire specifications
marked on the
sidewal l, for example :

This contains the follow ing information :

Indicates the tire is for passenger cars
235 Nominal tire width in mm of the tire from sidewall edge to side-
wall edge. In general, the larger the number, the wider the tire
35 Height/w idt h rat io in percent (aspect ratio)

18 Rim diameter code (in inches)
91 Load rating code
Y
Speed rating letter code
XL (or "xi", "EXTRA LOAD", or "RF") indicates that the tire is a"Rein -
forced" or an "Extra Load" tire
M+ S (or "M/S"l Indicates that the tire has some mud and snow capa -
bility

(TIN ) and t ire

This is t he tire's "serial number" . It begins with the letters "DOT"
and ind icates that the tire meets all federa l standards . The next two
numbers or letters indicate the plant where it was manufactured,
and the last four numbers represent the week and year of manufac-
ture . For example, the numbers 2210 mean that the tire was
produced in the 22th week of 2010. The ot her numbers are
marketing codes that may or may not be used by the tire manufac -
t urer . This information
is used to con t act consumers if a t ire defec t
requires a recall.
