Never place or install floor mats or other floor coverings in the
v ehi cle that cannot be properly secured in pla ce to prevent them
from slipping and interfering with the pedals or the ability to
control the vehicle .
Never place or install floor mats or other floor coverings on top
of already installed floor mats. Additional floor mats and other
coverings will reduce the size of the pedal area and interfere with
the pedals.
Always properly reinstall and secure floor mats that have been
taken out for cleaning .
Alway s make sure that objects cannot fall into the driver foot -
well while the vehicle is moving. Objects can become trapped
under the brake pedal and accelerator pedal causing a loss of
vehicle control. •

Loose items can also
i ncrease t he risk of ser ious persona l inj u ry in a sudde n vehic le
maneuver or in a col lision.
In a col li sio n, the laws of phys ics mean that even smalle r it ems t hat
are loose in the vehic le will become heavy missiles that can cause
seri ous inju ry. Items i n the vehicle possess energy which vary with
veh icle speed and t he we ight of th e item. Vehi cle spee d is t he m ost
significant factor .
Fo r example, in a frontal col l isio n at a speed of 30 mp h (48 km/ h),
the forces acting on a 10-lb (4.5 kg) ob j ect are about 20 times the

normal weight of the item . This means that the weight of the item
wo uld sudde nly be abo ut 200 lb s. (90 kg). You ca n im agine th e inj u-
r ies that a 200 lbs . (90 kg) item flying free ly through the passenger
compa rt m ent co ul d cau se in a collision like this .

Improperly stored luggage or other items can fly through the
vehi cle causing serious personal injury in the event of hard braking
or an accident. To help reduce the risk of serious personal injury :
Always put objects , for ex ample, luggage or other heavy items
in the luggage compartment .

Heavy loads will influence the way your vehicle handles. To help
reduce the risk of a loss of control leading to serious personal
injury :
Always keep in mind when transporting
heavy objects , that a
change in the center of gravity can also cause changes in vehicle
handling.
Never exceed the Gross Axle Weight Rating or the Gross
Vehicle Weight Rating specified on the safety compliance sticker
on the left door jamb . Exceeding permissible weight standards
can cause the vehicle to slide and handle differently .

Always make sure that the doors , all windows and the front lid are
securely closed and locked to redu ce the risk of injury when the
vehi cle is not being used .
After closing the front lid , always make sure that it is properly
closed and lo cked.
