EMI Considerations: Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Considerations

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Considerations

2042480-001 C
Electromagnetic energy that unintentionally affects the operation of another
electrical device is called electromagnetic interference (EMI). One form of
electromagnetic energy that can produce EMI is radio waves. Radio waves are
emitted from the antennas of cellular phones, citizens band radios, mobile two-
way radios (like those used in police, fire, and emergency vehicles), hand-held
two-way radios, radio stations, TV stations, amateur radio (ham) transmitters,
wireless computer links, microwave sources, and paging transmitters. Because
the intensity of electromagnetic energy is greatest near the source (transmitting
antenna), EMI from mobile radios is of special concern. The source of EMI caused
by radio waves may be difficult to determine since radio waves are invisible and
the signals may be intermittent.
To reduce the risk of EMI, follow these recommendations:
Do not turn on or use hand-held personal communications devices, such as
mobile two-way radios and cellular phones, near the Monitor.
In the case of unexplained EMI, consider the locations of nearby
transmitters such as radio or TV stations. You may have to move the
Monitor or place shield material between the transmitter and the Monitor.
Be aware that modifying this monitor or adding accessories or components
not specifically authorized by GE Medical Systems Information Technologies
may make the Monitor more susceptible to interference from radio waves.
When servicing the Monitor, use only replacement components authorized
by GE Medical Systems Information Technologies and be sure to replace all
shields, screws, and gaskets, in their exact locations as described in the
Dash 2500 Patient Monitor Service Manual (PN 2042481-001).
Do not put paint or labels over any metallic surfaces that have been left
bare for continuity of shielding.
CAUTION
Caution: Operation in proximity of microwave oven may cause
loss of data when using wireless technology.
