Central Office Steps

The following steps must be performed at the Central Office.
3.7.1

Step 1: Discover the ONT

Now that the ONT is physically installed at the Customer Premises and is reset to its factory-
default configuration, you must activate (turn up) the ONT on the PON.
A registration procedure must be used so the OLT can "recognize" the ONT just installed at
the Customer Premises. The ONT must be able to retrieve information from the DHCP server
when the ONT IP address is assigned to the data service.
There are four different methods for activating an ONT on the PON listed below. There are
advantages and disadvantages to using each method.

3.7.2

Method Guidelines for Activation

There are several methods to turn up a subscriber installation. Two methods commonly in use
are Auto-Activation and Auto-Discovery.
3.7.2.1 Auto-Activation
One method to turn up an ONT is by placing the ONT into Auto-Activation. When a new ONT
is plugged in, the next ONT index is automatically assigned to that unit and serial number.
If you are using the ADTRAN Advanced Operational Environment (AOE) or a Mosaic Captive
Portal (Mosaic CP) system, an ONT discovery trap is sent to a designated Trap-Host (AOE or
Mosaic CP).
The Trap-Host will direct AOE or Mosaic CP to push configuration to the OLT. This can either
be the full (Management + Data + Video) or just Management. If the latter, you will have
enough to talk to the RG and/or have the RG talk to a designated server, which will provide
more information, for example, a newer operating system.
3.7.2.2 Auto-Discovery
Another method is to put the ONT into Auto-Discovery mode. The OLT in the Central Office
will see the ONT, but you are responsible for assigning it to an ONT index. There is no auto-
pushing of configuration using Auto-Discovery mode.
