There are a couple of conventions in S language, and the most important are
the following:

Underscore refers to the lower rotator.
=
Equal sign refers to the upper rotator.
::
Double colon is the equivalent of the equal sign.
( )
Round brackets indicate a loop.
Caret means „relative to the previous position", and can be used

for the upper rotator, as the positions for the lower rotator are
always relative to the previous position.
