REAR BRAKE

WARNING
This section is one section of a complete service
manual. Before starting any procedure, read all
warnings and instructions that are located in the
Service Guidelines chapter.
The rear brakes are of a wet disc type and are enclosed
in the transaxle assembly.
The wear of the rear brake discs is determined by the
stroke of the brake piston. The service limit for the brake
piston stroke is 0.138 inches (3.5 mm). Estimation of the
piston stroke is performed by measuring the travel of the
parking brake arm. The equivalent travel of the brake arm
is 0.827 inches (21 mm).
When performing an inspection you should inspect both
the left and right brake.
It is recommended that if a wearable component is
replaced on one side of a vehicle, the same components
should be replaced on the other side of the vehicle.

Inspection

1: Disconnect the parking brake linkage from the
brake lever.
2: Lightly pull the brake lever until you feel it contact
the brake piston. This is the starting position.
3: Pull the lever hard until the brake is engaged and
measure the distance the lever moved.
4: If the distance traveled from the starting position
is longer than the service limit, then the brake
disc pack should be replaced.

WARNING
Current Taylor-Dunn® brakes are asbestos free.
However, there is the possibility that the original
brakes were replaced with aftermarket parts
containing asbestos. Since this possibility exists,
all brake parts should be handled as if they contain
asbestos. Refer to Appendix C for recommended
handling precautions.

Replace Discs

This procedure assumes that the gear/brake assembly
has been removed from the transaxle. Refer to the
Transaxle Section Gear/Brake Assembly removal
instructions for details and warnings regarding the
removal and installation procedure.
Note: Refer to the illustration for numbered items.
1: Remove the two retaining rings (43) from the two
studs (45).
2: Remove the disc pusher device (13, 75, 10) and
the disc brake pack.
3: Remove the two springs (67) from the studs (25).
4: Remove the support disc (12).
5: Thoroughly clean all components.
6: New friction discs should be soaked in oil for 24
hours before installation.
7: Assemble the disc pack in reverse order.

Pressure Regulator

WARNING
Do not adjust the pressure regulator to obtain a
higher pressure. Excessive brake fluid pressure to
the rear brake may result in damage to the seals and
sudden loss of the rear brakes.
There is a pressure regulator installed in the brake line
to the rear brakes. It is located in the hydraulic pump
compartment at the rear of the vehicle.
This regulator limits the pressure to the rear brakes.
If replacing the regulator, rotate the adjustment knob
counter clockwise until it is all of the way out.
