    Drive Axle E-451 & E-457 AXLE SHAFT Note: The oil level in the housing is close to the bottom of the axle flange. To minimize oil spills, raise the side of the vehicle high enough so that the oil level is below the bottom of the axle flange. If both axles have to be removed at the same time then all oil should be drained from the housing to minimize oil spills.     Drive Axle E-451 & E-457 9: Remove the pinion housing and pinion gear from DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLY (3RD the 3rd member. MEMBER) Note: Do not lose the spacers and shims in the WARNING pinion housing or the pinion housing shim(s). 10: If required, remove the rear tapered bearing from the pinion shaft and discard.

    Drive Axle E-451 & E-457 RE-SHIMMING THE PINION HOUSING The pinion housing shim may require replacement if the ring and pinion gear or pinion housing is replaced. Pinion housing shims are available from 0.005” to 0.021” in increments of 0.001”. Locate the number printed on the flat surface of the pilot bearing shaft of the pinion gear.
