PLANETARY GEAR BOX

This procedure assumes that the component has been
removed from the vehicle. Refer to the Gear/Brake
Assembly removal instructions for details and warnings
regarding the removal and installation procedure.
The left and right side gear boxes are not identical but
the disassembly and assembly procedures are the same.

Disassemble

1: Remove the four screws holding the gear cover
to the gear housing (fig 1).
2: Insert a pry bar into the four slots around the
cover and carefully separate the cover from the
housing.
3: Remove the brake assembly. Refer to the Brake
Service section for information.
4: Remove the input shaft bearing retaining ring
and using a rubber hammer, carefully remove the
input shaft and bearing (fig 2).
5: Remove the sun gear retaining ring.
6: Place a 92mm x 130mm (3.6 inch x 5.1 inch) disc
on the opposite side (brake side) of the cover.
7: Place a 17mm x 27mm (0.67 inch x 1.1 inch) pipe
over the sun gear and press the sun gear out of
the helix gear (fig 3).
8: Remove the planet gear retaining rings.
9: Remove the planet gears and bearings. A gear
puller may be required.
10: Using tool #96-500-45, remove the ring nut.
11: Place a 17mm x 27mm (0.67 inch x 1.1 inch) pipe
on the center of the M40 thread of the wheel hub
and press the hub out.
12: Remove the planet carrier.
13: Remove the ring gear retaining screws and
remove the ring gear.
