locations in space; when the audio information is decoded, each object is assigned to one or more
speakers based on the speaker layout you have. Most previous surround sound formats support
either five or seven speakers plus a subwoofer; Dolby Atmos adds the option to include width
speakers. Dolby Atmos also specifically supports "height channels". Height channels are used to
portray objects above the listener, and are reproduced either by speakers mounted in the ceiling,
or by special speakers mounted on top of certain other main channel speakers, and positioned to
bounce their audio signal off the ceiling, so it reaches the listener from above.
Users familiar with the options available under previous surround sound standards may find the
options offered by Dolby Atmos systems to be somewhat confusing.
- ALL DOLBY ATMOS CONTENT IS PLAYED ON THE RMC-1 USING THE DOLBY ATMOS DECODER.
When Dolby Atmos content is decoded by a Dolby Atmos decoder, both the bed channels and
the sound objects are assigned to the appropriate speakers by the Atmos Renderer. Because the
Atmos technology is able to assign any object to any speaker or speakers it chooses, and will do
so in what it considers to be optimum fashion, there is no option or need to upmix content to
ensure that all speakers are used. The Dolby Atmos decoder ONLY works on Dolby Atmos content.
- The Dolby Atmos system includes the Dolby Surround upmixer. The Dolby Surround upmixer is a
separate option designed to convert non-Atmos content into full surround sound audio, including
support for height channels. THE DOLBY SURROUND UPMIXER CAN BE USED WITH STEREO ANALOG
CONTENT, STEREO OR MULTI-CHANNEL PCM DIGITAL AUDIO CONTENT, OR DOLBY DIGITAL CONTENT
OTHER THAN ATMOS CONTENT, INCLUDING DOLBY DIGITAL AND DOLBY TRUEHD AUDIO. THE
DOLBY SURROUND UPMIXER CANNOT BE USED WITH DOLBY ATMOS CONTENT OR WITH CONTENT
ENCODED USING ANY DTS DIGITAL AUDIO FORMAT.
- The Dolby Atmos license does NOT allow audio in Dolby Atmos or other Dolby surround sound
formats to be processed using competing third-party upmixers like DTS Neural-X. (While the
Dolby license doesn't specifically preclude it, the RMC-1 does not offer any proprietary upmixing
options.)
DTS:X™
DTS:X is an object oriented surround sound technology, and is the main competitor to Dolby
Atmos in the USA.
- ALL DTS:X CONTENT IS PLAYED ON THE RMC-1 USING THE DTS:X DECODER. When DTS:X content
is decoded by the DTS:X decoder, the decoder assigns the audio content to the appropriate
speakers, and is able to assign any object to any speaker or speakers it chooses (within the
limitations of the technology). Becaue of this, there is no option or need to upmix content to
create additional channels.
- The DTS:X system includes the DTS Neural:X upmixer. The DTS Neural:X upmixer is a separate
option designed to convert non-DTS:X content into full surround sound audio, including support
for height channels. THE DTS NEURAL:X UPMIXER CAN BE USED WITH STEREO ANALOG CONTENT,
STEREO OR MULTI-CHANNEL PCM DIGITAL AUDIO CONTENT, OR DTS DIGITAL AUDIO CONTENT OTHER
THAN DTS:X CONTENT, INCLUDING DTS AND DTS MASTER AUDIO. THE DTS NEURAL:X UPMIXER
CANNOT BE USED WITH DTS:X CONTENT OR WITH CONTENT ENCODED USING ANY DOLBY DIGITAL
AUDIO FORMAT.
