Glossary
M10-94400-1
Nominal Stress.
Stress calculated on the basis of the net cross section of
a specimen without taking into account the effect of geo-
metric discontinuities such as holes, grooves, fillets, etc.
Offset Yield Strength.
Arbitrary approximation of elastic limit. It is the stress
that corresponds to the point of intersection of a stress-
strain diagram and a line parallel to the straight line por-
tion of the diagram. Offset refers to the distance between
the origin of the stress-strain diagram, and the point of
intersection of the parallel line and the 0 stress axis. Off-
set is expressed in terms of strain (often 0.2%).
Operating Stress.
Stress imposed on a part in service.
Overstressing.
Application of high fluctuating loads at the beginning of
a fatigue test and lower loads toward the end. It is a
means for speeding up a fatigue test.
Peel Resistance.
Torque required to separate an adhesive and adherend in
the climbing drum peel test (ASTM D-1781). It is a
measure of bond strength.
Peel Strength.
Measure of the strength of an adhesive bond. It is the av-
erage load per unit width of bond line required to part
bonded materials where the angle of separation is 180
degrees and separation rate is 6 in/min (ASTM D-903).
