THERMAL MANAGEMENT
22.
The Thermal Management feature of the speedMOPSlcdCE helps control the processor's temperature
by activating the automatic thermal throttling after the processor silicon reaches a certain
temperature. This feature can be enabled and configured in the BIOS Setup utility. You can specify
the temperature level when throttling starts, define a hysteresis value to get back to 100% CPU
performance, and specify the percentage for CPU performance in throttling mode. Automatic
thermal throttling mode does not require additional hardware, software drivers, or interrupt-
handling routines.
Additionally the processor of the speedMOPSlcdCE protects itself from catastrophic overheating by
using an internal thermal sensor. This sensor is set well above the normal operating temperature to
ensure that there are no false trips. The processor will stop all execution when the junction
temperature exceeds the sensor setting. This is signaled to the system by the THERMTRIP# (Thermal
Trip) pin. Once activated, the signal remains latched, and the processor stopped, until RESET# goes
active. There is no hysteresis built into the thermal sensor itself; as long as the die temperature
drops below the trip level, a RESET# pulse will reset the processor and execution will continue. If
the temperature has not dropped below the trip level, the processor will continue to drive
THERMTRIP# and remain stopped. The temperature level for catastrophic overheating being
activated is 135°C.
