Self-help, vehicle care
z Do not c onnec t leads to negative
terminal of discharged battery!
z Route the leads so that they ca nnot
catch on rotating p arts in the engine
com partment.
z Start the engine of the vehicle p rov id ing
the jump start.
z After 5 minutes, sta rt the other engine.
Start attem pts should be made for no
longer than 15 seconds at an interva l of
1 m inute.
z After the start, allow b oth engines to idle
for 3 minutes with the leads connected.
z In ord er to av oid ex cess voltage in the
elec trical sy stem, before removing a
lead, switch on an electrical consumer
(e.g. lamps, hea ted rear window) in the
vehicle receiving the jump start.
z Reverse above sequenc e exactly when
removing leads.

Towing

Tow ing the vehicl e
Screw the front towing ey e (stowed in a
bag in the lugga ge compartment) fully into
the front towing point.
Attac h a tow rope 3 - or b etter still, a tow
rod 3 - to the towing ey e, never to the
bumper or front suspension units.

Warning
Never lift the vehicle using the towing
eye!
Plac e the gear shift lever in neutra l. Switch
on the ignition to release the steering
colum n lock and to p ermit operation of the
brake lamps, horn and windscreen wipers.
Drive off slowly and avoid jerky
mov ements. Imperm issible trac tiv e forces
could da mage the vehicles.

Warnin g
More brak e p edal p ressure is necessa ry
when b ra king since the brake servo unit is
operative only when the engine is
running.
Considerably greater steering force is
necessary since the power steering unit is
operative only when the engine is
running.
To prevent the entry of ex ha ust gases from
the tow ing vehicle, switch on the air re-
circulation sy stem and close the windows.

Towi ng serv ice
Entrust your vehicle only to the towing
service of your choice and obtain an
estimate on towing costs before employing
any tow ing service. In this way y ou avoid
unnecessary c osts and possible insurance
problems during claim processing.
