❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Safer E-mail Transmission and Reception
To transmit and receive e-mail via the Internet with more security, you can
use APOP, SMTP authentication, and POP before SMTP for NIC FAX.
Function
APOP
When you use APOP, passwords are encrypt-
ed when e-mail is received. It is safer than
POP3 authentication (clear text) which does
not encrypt.
To use APOP, you need to use a POP server
that supports APOP.
SMTP authenti-
SMTP authentication (SMTP-AUTH) is an
cation
SMTP function that authenticates users to pre-
vent e-mail transmission via unauthorized ac-
cess to your server.
To use the SMTP authentication function, you
need to use an SMTP server that supports any
of three systems of SMTP authentication
(CRAM-MD5, PLAIN, LOGIN).
The account name and password specified in
the "Mail Server" settings are used for SMTP
authentication. Other account names and
passwords cannot be specified.
POP before SMTP This function prevents unauthorized access to
the SMTP server, and requires users to access
and log on the POP server before e-mail trans-
mission.
If the IMAP server supports AUTHENTICATE command (CRAM-MD5,
PLAIN, LOGIN), the user authentication enables logon with more security.
