Power over Ethernet concepts
Capacitor and resistor detection of PDs
The Ethernet Routing Switch 8300 PoE supports both the capacitor and resistor detection of
PDs. Periodically, the PSE looks for the signature that distinguishes a PD from a data-only
peripheral.
The Ethernet Routing Switch 8300 uses detection to connect safely and reliably to a
combination of legacy Ethernet equipment and PoE-enabled equipment. Power from the PSE
is provided only when a PD, which is successfully detected, connects at the PSE end point. In
all other conditions, data communication remains unaffected, but power over the link segment
is not supplied. Ocassionally, PSE may successfully detect a PD, but for reasons such as power
management may not power the detected PD.
If classification is supported and enabled after PD detection, the PSE looks for a classification
signature from the PD that identifies the power consumption.
MIB
The Ethernet Routing Switch 8300 PoE includes a Simple Network Management Protocol
(SNMP) agent that runs the Management Information Base (MIB) for power management. This
interface is defined by an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) draft (most recent release
draft-ietf-hubmib-power-ethernet-mib-03.txt) and enables powered Ethernet devices to
connect to a management application.

Configuring and managing PoE

You can configure PoE ports or modules by using the CLI, ACLI, or Device Manager.
Port level
You can use CLI, ACLI, or Device Manager to remotely manage the data or PoE power supplied
to the ports on either the 8348TX-PWR or 8348GTX-PWR module. For example,
administrators can disable a PoE-enabled port after detecting a breach of security. You can
monitor the condition and consumption of power at the port level to enhance the ability to
ensure smooth and efficient network operations.
You can perform the following tasks at the port level:
• Enable or disable PoE port power administration.
• Configure the PoE port power limit from 3 watts to 16 watts.
