Power over Ethernet concepts
• Ethernet Routing Switch 8348TX-PWR or 8348GTX-PWR module
• Ethernet Routing Switch 8300 software that includes a PoE Power Manager (PPM)
The Ethernet Routing Switch 8393SF/CPU Module provides the core switching fabric for the
Ethernet Routing Switch 8300 and runs PPM. The PoE circuitry on the 8348TX-PWR or
8348GTX-PWR module handles the following tasks:
• Integrates power and data on the Ethernet port or cable.
• Searches the link segment for a powered device (PD).
• Detects a PD.
• Supplies power to the link segment.
• Monitors the power on the link segment.
• Removes power from the link segment.
The PPM interacts with the PoE circuitry on the 8348TX-PWR or 8348GTX-PWR module and
Ethernet Routing Switch 8301 or 8302 power supply to supply PoE power. The PPM also
controls and monitors the power activities on the 8348TX-PWR or 8348GTX-PWR modules
and port.
Power sourcing equipment
The power sourcing equipment (PSE) provides power to the PD. In this case, the PSE is the
Ethernet Routing Switch 8348TX-PWR or 8348GTX-PWR module. The source of power for
the Ethernet Routing Switch 8300 is the Ethernet Routing Switch 8301 or 8302 power supply.
The Ethernet Routing Switch 8310 or 8306 chassis with PoE backplane, Ethernet Routing
Switch 8393SF/CPU Module, and Ethernet Routing Switch 8348TX-PWR or 8348GTX-PWR
module contribute the required power onto the network.
Powered device
A powered device (PD) is a device that either draws or requests power by entering a valid key
during the detection algorithm. Some examples of PDs include IP phones, wireless LAN access
points, laptop computers, and Web cameras.
With PoE, power sourcing equipment detects the presence of an appropriate PD and injects
applicable current into the Ethernet cable. Any valid PD can receive all of its needed power
from the cable.
PoE Power Manager (PPM)
As part of the Ethernet Routing Switch 8300 software, the PoE Power Manager (PPM) is a
software application that handles all the PoE power configuration and management operations
for the Ethernet Routing Switch 8300.
