ENGINE (IGNITION) SWITCH, TRANSMISSION AND PARKING BRAKE
5−speed manual transmission
The shift pattern is as shown above. In
case of driving your
6−speed manual transmission, you must
lift up the ring around the gear shift
lever to shift into "R" (reverse).
CAUTION
6−speed manual transmission—The
shift lever knob can become extreme-
ly hot after parking under the sun.
Press the clutch pedal down fully while
shifting, and then release it slowly. Do not
rest your foot on the pedal while driving,
because it will cause clutch trouble. Do
not use the clutch to hold the vehicle
when stopped on an uphill grade—use the
parking brake.
Upshifting too soon or downshifting too
late will cause lugging, and possibly ping-
ing. Regularly revving the engine to maxi-
mum speed in each gear will cause ex-
cessive engine wear
consumption.

damage to the transmission, observe
the following precautions.
z Do not shift the shift lever to "R"
without depressing the clutch pedal.
z Do not lift up the ring section ex-
cept when shifting the lever to "R".
z Shift the shift lever to "R" only
when the vehicle is stationary.
