Information About Package Management
The general procedure for adding and activating a package on the router is as follows:
1.
2.
3.
4.
The first step is not required when adding and activating PIE files already stored on the router. For
example, if the Security package is stored on flash disk1:, but is not active, you can add, activate, and
commit that package file.
Although, you can transfer PIE files to flash disk1: or flash disk0:, the recommended approach is to store
PIE files on flash disk1:. Flash disk1: serves as the archive for PIE files that are no longer in use or have
yet to be added. Flash disk0: serves as the storage location for all files that are ready for activation.
When you add a package file to the router, you are preparing the package for activation on one or more
cards. An added package is ready to be activated, but it is not applied until you activate it. After you
activate a package, that package operates on all specified cards until the router is restarted. To ensure
that the package operates after any router restarts, you must commit the activated file.
A committed package operates on the router until an operator rolls back or deactivates the package. The
roll back process deactivates the active package and reactivates a previously active package. The
deactivation process deactivates the package and does not activate any other packages in its place.
The Cisco IOS XR software provides many features for copying, adding, and activating software
packages. You can copy software from several types of servers, and you can use command options to
combine two or three of these steps.

Upgrading Packages

To upgrade a package that is currently active on the router, activate a newer version of the same package
for one or more cards where an older version is already active (see
same software package is deactivated automatically. These actions are permitted only after the package
compatibility checks have passed.
Inactive packages are not removed from the storage device. To delete an inactive package from the disk,
enter the install remove command. See the
page 6-29
Upgrading or downgrading a software package can cause a process to restart or a new process to start.
