5 speed transmission
selector lever positions
Note The engine will not start unless the
transmission gear selector is in position
P (park) or N (neutral).
P (park)
In this position the driven
(rear) wheels are locked
to prevent the vehicle from
moving. To park the vehicle
always select this position
and apply the park brake
before leaving the vehicle.
Before selecting position P,
have the vehicle stationary
and pause for a moment,
to allow the transmission
to adjust to the stationary
vehicle.
With the selector lever in
this position the engine can
be started.
WARNINg
Selecting position P while the vehicle is still moving can cause damage to the
transmission.
Do not press the accelerator pedal with the brakes on in any gear except position
P (park) or N (neutral). This will overheat the transmission.
R (reverse)
The reverse gear will be engaged when selecting this position and the
reverse lamps will illuminate when the ignition is switched on.
Note Make sure the vehicle is stationary before moving the selector
lever to or out of position R.
After selecting R, pause for a moment before accelerating, to allow the
transmission to engage the reverse gear.
N (neutral)
This is the out-of-gear position, i.e. the transmission is disconnected
from the driveline. If necessary, the vehicle can be moved without the
engine running, e.g. to be towed or pushed. Refer to Towing a disabled
vehicle in chapter 6.
With the selector lever in this position a stalled engine can be restarted
while the vehicle is still moving.
WARNINg
To prevent the vehicle from moving when position N is selected, always apply the
park brake, depress the foot brake or use suitable chocks to block the wheels.
Do not coast the vehicle in position N (neutral) – this decreases your control and
ability to accelerate quickly in an emergency.
