AIRBAgS
When airbags inflate, an operating noise may be heard and a small amount of smoke-
like gas is released. The gas is harmless and does not indicate malfunction or fire. The
airbag then deflates, with the whole process taking only a moment.
WARNINg
Airbags are part of the 'Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)' as they assist, but
do not replace seatbelts. Airbags do not deploy in every accident. Various factors
dictate whether they deploy including speed, angle of collision and object hit. Airbags
are not designed to inflate if the vehicle is hit from the rear or is involved in a rollover.
Seatbelts must be worn by all passengers whenever the vehicle is moving.
Airbags inflate with great force. If you are too close to an inflating airbag it may
cause injury. Seatbelts help keep you in position for airbag inflation in the event of
a collision.
Fifteen seconds after any airbag or seatbelt pretensioner has been activated (the vehicle
has stopped and provided there is battery power), the vehicle will:
unlock the doors
switch off the fuel pump
switch on the hazard lamps
Switch the ignition off and then on if restarting the engine is required.
An SRS warning lamp v on the instrument panel illuminates for a few seconds when
the ignition is switched on. This is to indicate that the airbags are operational. If the lamp
does not illuminate when the ignition is switched on, or if it illuminates when driving,
contact your Holden Dealer immediately, as the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners
may not function correctly in the event of an accident.
The warning lamp illuminates after an accident if any airbags or seatbelt pretensioners
have activated. Refer to Warning/reminder indications in chapter 1A.
After an accident in which the driver's airbag system is deployed, the steering wheel,
steering column, airbag, seatbelt retractor, seatbelt buckle, Sensing Diagnostic Module
(SDM) and sensor(s), must be replaced. The occupied front seat must be checked for
seat base and seat back deformation.
After passenger's airbag deployment, the airbag assembly, seatbelt retractor, seatbelt
buckle and the upper part of the instrument panel must be replaced. The occupied front
seat must be checked for seat base and seat back deformation.
It is recommended that this work be carried out by a Holden Dealer or approved repairer.
The system should also be inspected by a Holden Dealer if the dashboard area or
steering wheel is scratched, cracked or damaged.
Extensive design and testing has gone into the Holden airbag system. However, it
should be treated with respect. Any interference with the system could lead to its failure
or to accidental inflation.
Any work to the electrical system, steering column, dashboard area, steering wheel or
airbag system should only be carried out by an authorised Holden Dealer.
Note Fitting a roo bar or nudge bar can change the impact speed which would normally
cause the front airbags to inflate, reducing effectiveness and potentially increasing the
risk of injury and repair cost. Refer to Add on equipment in chapter 4.
