Installing the Energy Meter & CTs
WARNING. Connect the Energy Meter as shown in the following sections. Ensure that Current Transformers
(CTs) and corresponding supply cable are connected to the same phase. Incorrect connection will cause
incorrect data and may damage the meter.
2.7.1

OVERVIEW

The Redback Smart Hybrid System includes a Redback SM3000 energy meter suitable for single, two or three-phase
installations or AC-Coupled configuration.
The energy meter uses a "split core" type current transformer (CT). The CT installation is non-intrusive: it simply clips onto the
target cable. The meter directly indicates if the system's net energy flow—whether importing or exporting. The installation
process is:
Install the energy meter to meter box or suitable location.
Attach CTs, hook up supply, and run communication cable to the inverter.
Use RedbackINSTALL to configure the installation.

INSTALLATION NOTES

No two installations are the same; variations occur due to age, equipment, technology, local regulations, and work
practices. This manual provides a general guide to installation. Installers are required to adapt the information
provided to the current installation, adhering to all local regulations and standards, and good electrical practice.
Isolate ALL sources of power before beginning installation.
Inspect the meter box or other installation site. Identify:
o Mounting options for new meter (typically on 35mm DIN rail; 36mm width required)
o Attachment points for Current Transformers (CTs) on L1, L2, L3
o Supply take-off point (L1, L2, L3, N)
o Communications cable routing options (to the Redback inverter)
The meter is not waterproof and must be mounted in a weatherproof enclosure, preferably inside a meter box.
The meter does not generate significant heat. It may be mounted adjacent to other equipment that is not a heat
source.
The meter and CTs are mated and calibrated at the factory. Ensure disconnected CTs are reconnected to the
original terminals.
CTs have a 2m long cable. The cable can be shortened or coiled if necessary.
The communication cable is a straight-thru Cat 5 ethernet cable, using the supplied adaptor.
2.7.3

METER INSTALLATION ON A DIN RAIL

The meter has a 35mm DIN rail mount. If no DIN rail position is available, the meter may be installed in a weatherproof
enclosure.
To mount the energy meter on a DIN rail:
Press the unlock lever. Release the clip
Hook meter onto DIN rail
Rotate so that body is flush against the rail
Push clip up until there is a "Click!". The Meter should be secured to the
rail.
