E
E1
Similar to the North American T1, E1 is the European format for digital transmission. E1 carries
signals at 2.048 Mbps (32 channels at 64 Kbps), versus the T1, which carries signals at 1.544 Mbps
(24 channels at 64 Kbps). E1 and T1 lines may be interconnected for international use. See also T1.
Encapsulating Security Payload
Provides confidentiality for IP data grams by encrypting the payload data to be protected.
Encryption
The use of algorithms such as MD5 or SHA to encrypt (code) and decrypt (decode) a password. Most
encryption algorithms rely upon some sort of private key.
EOC – Embedded Operation Channel
ESP – Encapsulated Secure Payload
A security protocol used for packet confidentiality.
EWA – Encryption With Authentication
A security protocol that performs both encryption and authentication on the packet in a single
transform.
F
Firewall
Usually a combination of hardware and software that protects an organization's network from external
attacks or intrusions. Most firewalls make use of a proxy server that performs a validation and
filtering function for the organization.
FR – Full Rate, also Frame Relay
FTP – File Transfer Protocol
FTP is the protocol used on the Internet for sending files.
FxO – Foreign eXchange channel unit – Office end
FxS – Foreign eXchange channel unit – Station unit
G
Gatekeeper
A gatekeeper is an API that is used to bridge a traditional PSTN and VoIP by linking PSTN to IP
networks and managing traffic that contains a mixture of voice, fax, data and video. Gatekeepers are
able to process the signaling for all types of packet protocols. A gatekeeper is software-based
switching platform, which is opposed to traditional hardware-based switching center technology.
Gatekeepers also are based on open systems, another difference between them and traditional
proprietary hardware switching systems.
Gatekeepers are also called soft switch, media gateway controller and call agent.
