Two-wire dial Hayes emulation
mode is the factory default
configuration for the modem.
Hayes mode operation is explained
in detail in Chapter 5.
To dial a telephone number
in Hayes mode, type the Hayes
command AT D on your computer
or terminal keyboard followed by
the number you want to call. For
example:
AT D 5551212 [CR]
Dashes or spaces may be
included for clarity, but they are
not necessary. (The modem will
ignore them.) A carriage return
[CR] or period is required at
the end of each command line.
(On most keyboards, the carriage-
return [CR] key is labeled "Enter"
or "Return.") In response to the
command line shown above,
the modem will dial the number
555-1212.

CHAPTER 2: Quick Start
If you have to dial an access
code such as 9 to dial out of your
building, insert the access code
and a comma in the dial string.
AT D 9,5551212 [CR]
The comma causes the modem
to pause for 2 seconds. This allows
the modem to detect a second dial
tone (after the access code) before
dialing the number.
The default dialing mode is pulse
dialing. To change to tone dialing,
insert a T after AT D: AT DT. To
change from tone dialing to pulse
dialing, insert a P: AT DP. The
specified dialing mode will remain
active until the alternate mode is
specified or the modem is reset.
When a phone number is
successfully dialed, a "CONNECT"
message will appear on the
computer screen, and the LCD
on the modem will display a status
screen that typically look like this:
D TR MR
9600
TD and RD will be flashing (to
