If t h e above is found to b e in order
2. First of all remove the t o p cap (V) from the psz;np t o see if the float
chamber contains petrol. If it does then 'the t'puuble is not d u e t o
the p u m p .
3.
If the p u m p continues t o make a pumping noise without delivering
petrol, it is d u e to o n e of the following causes
:-
(a) Lack of petrol in the tank.
(b) Air leak, whicll may be d u e t o
(1)
a bad joint between the filter bowl ( U ) and t h e casing, in
which event tightening up will generally correct. If it does not
d o so a new washer will have t o b e fitted
o r
(2) a loose petrol union in the suction pipe, that is t o say any
point between the bottom union of th,e p u m p a n d the petrol tank.
T h e washer betw,een t h e filter bowl a n d its bolt ( T ) should also
b e inspected.
(C) F o o t Valve ( F ) held up. T h i s is a very rare source of trouble.
T o rmectify remove the filt,er bowl

Filt'er
(H)
a n d foot v a l v e

4.
I f the p u m p works very slowly without delivering petrol, it is d u e t o
(a) Blocked petrol p i p e o r filters, in which case t h e filters o r pipe
must b e cleaned o u t .
(b) Batteries run down, in which case fill the float chamber of the
p u m p with petrol. This will probably 'enable t h e engine t o b e
started u p by hand, and as the d y n a m o comes into action it will
boost u p the batteries sufficiently t o run the p u m p .
5.
Should the p u m p not work at all, providing the plung,er has not
stuck, the trouble will b e d u e to
(a) A bad elfectrical connection. 'To test this r,emove t h e terminal
from the p u m p and flash the wire across the p u m p body. If
there is a bright flash this is in order. If not, the trouble is d u e
t o t h e batteries being run down o r bad connections somewh'ere
in the system.
T h e electrical apparatus is t o all intents and purposes absolutely fool
proof.
Practically th,e only thing that can cause this t o cease t o function
is a broken wire. If r,eference is made t o t h e diagram t h e connections will
b e seen exactly. T o gain acc'ess to the electrical part of t h e p u m p it will b e
necessary t o remove Filter Bowl ( U ) , foot valve (Y), unscrew t h e large
hexagon nut
(W)
holding the inlet ring, when the casing can b e drawn off
a n d the internal parts of the electrical equipm, ent and connections inspected.
C a r e must be taken t o see that the cork gland washer which makes a petrol
tight joint between the inlet ring and electrical equipment is in perfect
condition.
A
