T h e gearbox and back axle should be drained after the first
1,000
miles, and subs~equ~ently every
2,C\00
mil'es.
W h e n refilling the gearbox
r,equires o n ~ e pint of oil and the back axle o n e and a half pints. T h e drain
plugs will be found at th.e bottoms of the housings, and it is easiest to drain
immediabely after a run when the oil is warm and flows freely.
Clutch.
T h e operation of the clutch o n th,e modern motor car is
comparatively speaking fool-proof, that is to say wh,en the clutch pedal is
pushed down the power from the enginse in disconnected, but when the
prsessure on the pedal is released the clutch engages. F r o m a point of view
of actual maintenance there are only two items in connection with th'e clutch
that the own'er need trouble about-one'is
periodical lubrication of the
clutch withdrawal ball rac,e o r thrust, secondly, adjustmfent of th'e set screws
attached to the withdrawal arms in ordser to give the necessary clearance
between the clutch plates wh8en th,e clutch is disengaged and equally to
prevent slipping when engaged.

T h e withdrawal only n,eeds a little lubricant, too much is worse than none
at all. Excess will be flung on to the clutch plates which will cause slipping.
D o not put more work o n the withdrawal bearing than is necessary by pressing
th'e foot o n the clutch pedal when driving. T o d o so will overheat the with-
drawal and induce clutch slip.
