Engine as seen from below. T h e r e is the sump, the oil p u m p , the front
engine bracket, and the oil return pipes from the cylinder head. It is obvious
that it is a ~ o m p a r a t i v ~ e l y easy matter to withdraw the oil p u m p at any time.
However, when the p u m p is removed it is as well also to remove the
H.T.
distributor.
T h e slots in the drive sleeve hav,e to register with the tongue
o n the distributor shaft. T h e y
will
"
go " o n e way only.
It will b e seen o n reference to Illustration N o . 25 that the upper end of
the p u m p spindle is fitted with gear wheel pinned o n to the driven shaft.
T h e p u m p is attached by means of three studs and is driven by a gear wheel
fitted to the crankshaft.

Illustration N o . 26 shows how the front end engine bearer has first of

been removed from t h e front end engine cover. T h e oil retaining flange is
removed and then the front end engine housing withdrawn by t h e removal
of four bolts dieclosing t h e front e n d of the crankshaft as seen in the
Illustration.
T h e front end thrust of the crankshaft is taken through a
hardened steel washer butting u p :igainst the bronze washer which in turn
butts against the front end housing and the correct assembly of the crankshaft
in the housing is obtained by interposing a number of shims (shown vertically
above the hole in the crank case) between the housing cover and t h e cast
iron case.
It is a comparatively easy matter to oemove the Distributor complete
by slacking off th,e nut o n the plate that locks the unit in position. This nut
must not b,e confused with the nut which locks t h e distributor t o th,e advance
