is a picturse of the rear axle casing with the complete
differential assembly removed, and o n e axle shaft and hub removed as well.
Before the differential can be withdrawn, it is necessary to withdraw the axle
shafts.
Axle Dismantlement. First remove the wheels and brake drums. T h c
h u b and

shaft can be withdrawn by refitting a wheel and pulling outward3
and th'e view obtained in Illustration No.
40
will be visible. This shows that
the axle shaft passes through the hollow axle casing, and the Inner hub flange
runs o n a large ball bearing. This bearing has to b e periodically lubricated
which is effected by forcing a little grease through a nipple o n the insidse of
the hub recess.
IJnder n o circumstanoes should G e a r Oil be used for this
bearing, but o n the other hand a grease of the nature of vaselin'e is 'essential,
as for example Shell R.B. This grease will remain in the bearing and not be
flung o u t and find its way o n to the brakes. T h e ball bearing is locked o n
the axle tube by means of a ring nut and tab washer.
If ever the ring nuts
have t o
be
slackened they can b e driven off by a brass drift and hammer
Steel punches should never be used, except in absolute emergency.

Differential. After the axle shafts have been withdrawn it is possible ro
remov,e the complete differential. T h e helical cut crown wheel is shown
o n the right hand sid'e of t h me illustration, after being removed from the
aluminium housing and thme bridge pieces which hold it in position. T h e
driving bevel assembly has also been dismantbed

this runs o n o n e roller and
o n e ball bearing, the bearings b~eing spaced apart by a distance collar. A
number of shims are provided t o take care of the correct m,eshing of the
driving bevel with th'e crown wheel. T h e rtear end plat,e enclosing the whole
assembly is provided with tapped holes
