Universal Joint and Propeller Shaft. T h e tubular propeller shaft is fitted
at 'either e n d with H a r d y Spicer Universal Joints.
T h e front e n d of t h e
propeller shaft is castellated and this fits inside t h e castellated e n d of t h e
Universal J o i n t . T h e object of this is t o allow for the end movement of the
propeller shaft d u e t o t h e flexion of t h e rear springs and the rise a n d fall of
t h e axle.

of
thc universal joint is entirely enclosed by covers held i n position hy a spring.
I t is necessary t o keep this sliding coupling joint lubricated, a n d for this
purpose a nipple is provided a t 'either end, access t o which is provided in
the tunnel. T h e universal joint p r o p e r consists of a plate carrying two jaws,
a cross head with hardened steel roller bushes, and t h e opposite set of jaws
attached t o t h e propeller shaft. T h e entire universal joint is enclosed by a
pressed steel cover a n d a spring loaded dust excluder cover. Thme hardened
steel rollers are grooved t o receive semi-circular wire rings which prevents
them floating outwards.
I t is essential that this joint should b e packed with
H a r d y Spicer grease.
F o r this purpose use t h e small g u n provided in the
tool kit, which is filled with this grease when th'e car is supplied.
Rear Axle.
T h e ext,ernal appearance of t h e rear axle can be seen from
Illustration
No. 38.
T h e casing consists of a steel stamping f o r m i n g what
is known as t h e
"
Banjo."
T h e complete differential assembly including
t h e driving bevel a n d crown wheel a r e mounted o n t h e front cover plate.
T h e rear cover plate carries the oil filler extension.
A
drain plug is provided
beneath the axle f o r draining this from time t o time.
