shows the flywheel removed and the flywheel boss
and bearing sleeve removed from the crankshaft. T h e flywheel boss is held
o n the crankshaft by means of a castellated nut, and a special shaped cotter,
which latter is held in position by a collar and spring steel clip which registers
into a groove inside th,e boss.
In order to remove the crankshaft flange, i t is necessary to employ a tool
similar to that shown in Illustration No.
30.
Engine Lubrication. T h e engir:e sump I~olds one gallon of oil and is re-
plenishmed through an easily accessible filler o n the off side of the engine. T h e
oil lev,el in the sump is quickly ascertained by means of the
"
dip-stick,"
which is just beside the oil filler; this has two marks o n it, the upper one
showing the level with the sump full, while the loner one is the danger line.

read. These precautions are necessary,

when the engine is running the oii
in the sump is churned up, and splashes o n the dip-stick may give a false
reading.
T h e oil level should be inspected every day before starting out, or every
100-150 miles on a long tour, and although it need not always be absolutely
full, the level should be kept well up, especially when the car is new and
never allowed to fall lower than half-way b'etween the
"
full " and
"
danger
"
marks. At the same timme overfilling should be carefully avoided as this
causes the oiling up of the plugs.
A gear-type pump is carried at the front of the engine and driven from

and dismantled form causes the Oil in the sump to he sucked through the
gauze strainer into the Pump l b d y and dmelivered to the Main Rearing by ,In
internal duct, the overhead gear being fed with an external pipe. T h e Punlp
is fitted with a cover plate and having a bye-pass relief valve incorporated in
