travel of the internal mechanism of the gsear. T h e numb.er of turns of
th.e steering wheel required to bring th'e gear from o n e end of its travel
to th'e other should be counted. T h e n , commencing from o n e of these
stops, take the wheel back half the complete number of turns available,
which will bring the st'eering mechanism into its central position.
Now, with the gear mechanism in its central position, the front
wheels set pointing slightly as though the car were turning a left hand
corner, fit the serrated cone in the top of the d r o p arm t o th,e rocker
shaft. T h e reason the front wheels ar'e set in this position is because the
from straight ahead to full left lock than when going from straight ahead
t o full right lock.
Befor'e tightening up, however, the following check should always be
carried out.
T h e front wheels still being jack'ed up, with the steering wh'eel pull
the steering right over to lock, eith,er right o r left. W i t h the steering
wheel and front wh,eels in this position, d r o p the drag link off the d r o p
arm, and see wh'ether you can move the stte'ering wheel any further in this
same direction. If you can, everything is in ord,er, and th,e same proce-
d u r e should then be followed o n the other lock.
Should further nlovement of the st'eering wheel be unobtainable. it
means the front axle stops ar8 not operating, and som,e adjustment must
be made as follows
:
-
If there is movement of the steering wheel available o n on'e lock, but
not o n thce other, the d r o p arm should be p u t o n the next serration o n th,e
focker shaft, which may put matt'ers right.
If no serration will give free movement of the steering wheel at both
locks, then the front axle stops must be look'ed to and alt, ered so that
there is.
T h e amount of free movement available after dropping the drag link
off the d r o p arm, should be the same at both locks, and this is the
condition at which to aim.
T h e instructions given in this section may appear complicated, but in
reality the operation is o n e of th,e simplest charact,er.
It will b'e appreciated that the movement of the rocker shaft and drop arm
is restricted by the internal stops fitted in the steering box, and it is therefore
necessary to fix the drop arm and connect the same up t o th'e front wheels o n
the o n e hand, and to the steering box mechanism on the other hand, so that
the necessary movement of the front wheels from lock to lock is obtained at the
same time as the follower is travelling from e n d t o end of the cam track, but
not far enough in either direction to hit the intternal stops in thme steering box.
T h e whole of the instructions in this section are design,ed to attain this
end.
Shock Absorbers.
These are correctly set for average loads before the
x r leaves the Works, but
a
little loosen~ess may becomse apparent after the
first few hundred miles, rendering adjustment necessary. This is effected by
means of the large hexagon nut with pointer attached, which is turned clock-
wise
(ordinary right-hand thread) to tighten the shock absorber. T h e dial is
graduated
0, 2, 4, 8,
2nd the pointer should not be moved more than o n e
degree at a tim,e, testing rrepeatedly (preferably at speed o n a rough road)
