Coil.-The,
coil unit is not adjustable in i n y way, and requires no
attention bevond seeing that the terminal connections are kept tight, and

and the car is stationary.
T h e warning lamp will also light when the engin'e is running very slowly, d u e
to the fact that the dynamo is not running at sufficient speed to generat,e a
high enough voltage to actuate the cut-out.
The Detection and Remedy of Ignition Faults.-If
a failure of ignition o r
mistiring~occurs, unless the cause is at once apparent the owner is strongly
recommended to proceed in accordance with .the following routine which
should.quickly enable him to locate the trouble.
Before proceeding with the examination, make sure that the trouble is
not due to defects in the engine, carburetter, petrol supply, sparking plugs, etc.
Engine will not Fire.-Switch
o n the ignition, turn the engine and observe
the afimeter reading. T h e engine s h u l d be turned by hand if it is known
that the battery is in a low state of charge.
If an ammeter readfog is given which rises and falls with the closing and
opening of the contacts, then the low tension wiring is in order. If the
rerrding does not fluctuate in this way, a short in the low tension wiring is
indicated,
ot
the contacts are remaining closed. W h e n no reading is given,
a broken o r loose connection in the low tension +ring is indicated, o r the
battery may be exhausted.
Examine the high t'ension cables, i.e., cables from t'he coil to the dis-
tributor, and from the distributor to the plugs.
If the rubber shows signs of
deterioration o r cracking, the cabbe should be renewed.
Remove the
distributor moulding and examine the contacts; if necessary, d e a n them as
described on page
50.
T u r n the engine over by hand, and see that the contacts
come together.
If a fault is indicated in the low tension wiring, examine the cal?les from
the switch o r junction box to coil, and from coil to distriblitor.
See that the
battery terminals are tight and that the cables from the switch-box to the
battery ?re secure. T h e battery may be dismissed as the cause of the trouble
if the lamps will light.
Test the coil independently of the distributor as follows :-"Remove
the
cable from the centre distributor terminal, 'and hold it about :in. from some
metal part
of
the chassis and turn the engine. The.sparki.ng should be strong
and regular if the coil is functioning correctly.
Misfiring and Bad Starting.-Examine
the high tension cables and the
plugs.
If necessary, adjust the gaps to the correct setting (about
20
thousandths of an inch). Sooty o r oiled plugs may be dismantled and
washed out with'petrol.
T h e plugs and high tension cables may be t'ested by removing the plugs
in turn and allowing them to rest o n the cylinder head and observing whether
