f r e e l y i n their holders. T h i s c a n easily b e ascertained b y h o l d i n g back t h e
s p r i n g a n d gently p ~ ~ l l i n g e a c h flexibl,e lead, w h e n t h e b r u s h s h o u l d m o v e
w i t h o u t t h e slightest suggestion of sluggishn,ess. T h ' e b r u s h e s s h o u l d b e clean
a n d s h o u l d " b e d " o v e r t h e w h o l e of t h e i r w o r k i n g s u r f a c e ; t h a t is t o say,
t h e face i n contact w i t h t h e c o m m u t a t o r s h o u l d a p p e a r u n i f o r m l y p o l i s h e d .

t h e screw, t h e n , whil'e h o l d i n g t h e s p r i n g lever back o u t of th.e way, with-
d r a w i n g t h e b r u s h f r o m its h o l d e r . T h e n e w b r u s h can t h e n b'e fitted b y
reversing t h e o p e r a t i o n .

m i n d w h e n th,e brushes h a v e b e e n i n use f o r a l o n g t i m e a n d a r e v e r y n i t ~ c h
w o r n d o w n .
