W h e n the casing is rsemoved care must be taken to see that the wires are
not broken, and particularly that the top wire does not come across the
rocking contact plate
(M). A
simple test for the contacts being in working
order, providing the bottom plunger has not stuck, is t o removse the cap
(V)
from thse t o p of th,e p u m p and lift the float ( R ) up and down its full stroke.
If listened for intently the rocker plate can be heard t o click as it breaks the
contact.
If after being re-assembled th'e p u m p works, but does not deliv,er petrol,
it should be primed by pouring a small quantity of petrol into the top
chamber. If petrol is not available a few squirts of thin oil down the tube of
th'e p u m p aft,er removing the Float ( R ) and top plunger
(K)
will have the
same effect. Please not'e the oil must be thin.
T h e Petrol P u m p is unconditionally guaranteed (except for obvious
mishandling) by the makers, Th'e
S.U.
Carbur,etter Co. Ltd., East Works,
I3ordsley Gr,een Road, Adderley Park, Birmingham, to whom ail queries
should be addressed.
The Carburetters. T h e functioning of the twin carburetters can be
followed in detail by reference to illustration and, since the carburetters are
identical, the following paragraphs which describe o n e instrument will suffice.
T h e petrol flow to the jet is governed by a float mechanism, where the rising
petrol lifts the float, forcing it against the guide and needle of the petrol valve
in such a way that when the petrol reaches a prme-determined level, the flow is
automatically cut off. T h e lid of the float-chamber can readily be detached
after r e m o v i n t the petrol pipe, and undoing the nut in the centre of the top.
