VSky A1100 Product Manual Promise Technology, Inc. Node Host Name, IP Address and DNS VSky storage servers support simultaneous S3, NAS and iSCSI operations using the same physical storage resources. A multi-node VSky server cluster needs to create redundancy for high availability, therefore it must have some failover mechanism to continue operations in the event of a node going offline. How the IP settings for the nodes and how DNS services for resolving the host names of the nodes is handled in a failover situation is key to providing continuity of operations for S3, NAS and iSCSI clients. The basics of how this done is discussed here. Each node in the VSky cluster is connected to a different group of clients. These clients are using NAS, S3 or iSCSI to create the connection. For NAS and iSCSI clients, each node functions in the role of a gateway device.
  • Page 70 Administration Promise Technology, Inc. NAS/iSCSI failover example - Takeover IP Address In the illustration above, one node goes offline. The Takeover IP Address is immediately assigned to another node, so incoming DNS queries direct clients to the gateway that will handle clients that were previously managed by the offline node. S3 failover example Failover for S3 clients works differently. S3 clients that were connected via the offline node are redirected to the other available nodes.
  • Page 71: S3 S Etup

VSky A1100 Product Manual Promise Technology, Inc. S3 S etUp Every S3 client requires two alphanumeric keys, the Access Key and Secret Key. RRS on the VSky can back up from one type of service to another, or to the same type of service*, on the remote cluster. That is, for example, data available on the local VSky iSCSI service, can be backed up to a remote VSky OSD or NAS. In order to use RRS, it first must be enabled with in text mode. RRS must be enabled on only one node in a cluster, that node functions as the server. Note that the gateway function must be enabled to use RRS. If it is not enabled, first enable it under Node Management, then enable RRS.
  • Page 84: Import Shared Keys For Rrs

Administration Promise Technology, Inc. Import Shared Keys for RRS Perform this task for both VSky clusters involved in RRS. You need to access both the both local and remote clusters simultaneously. It is necessary to first obtain the shared key from one server, then add that key to the remote server, and vice versa. For simplicity in the example, we refer to cluster A and cluster B to distinguish between the two clusters being configured for RRS. Launch a web browser and go to the cluster home page, then follow these steps to exchange the shared keys: 1. In the home page of the cluster A, click the Remote DR (data replication/recovery) menu tab.

Click on the preferred option button to choose the type of RRS, one time or recurrent replication. In a new menu, set the schedule for the replication task.

Follow the instructions here to set up RRS between two S3 clusters. Note that it is necessary to change configuration of the DNS server used by both clusters. Before implementing the S3 multi-region configuration, make sure you are able to enter the configuration manually into the DNS server configuration in order to resolve the endpoint URL used for RRS.

Pools that are created by the administrator can be deleted, but the default pool cannot be deleted.

  • Page 100: Replication Number

Administration Promise Technology, Inc. Replication number Replication number refers to the number of existing copies of the data set for a node in the server, including the original. So, for example, a replication number of 2 means one copy is created (1 copy plus 1 original equal 2 replicas). The number of replications cannot exceed the number of nodes in the cluster. Change the number of replications created for the pool. By default, the number of replications is 2, the maximum is 3. If you enter 1, then there will be no redundancy. Quota setting A quota setting for a pool limits the amount of storage capacity allocated for the pool.
