N-560 Performance Considerations
Dysfunctional Hemoglobins
N-560 Operator's Manual
WARNING: Pulse oximetry readings and pulse signals can be
affected by certain ambient environmental conditions, sensor
application errors, and certain patient conditions. See the
appropriate sections of the manual for specific safety information.
The performance of the N-560 can be verified by following the
procedures outlined in the Performance Verification section of the N-560
service manual. Qualified service personnel should perform these
procedures before using the N-560 for the first time in a clinical setting.
Certain patient conditions can affect the measurements of the N-560 and
cause the loss of the pulse signal.
Inaccurate measurements can be caused by:
•
excessive patient movement
•
venous pulsations
•
intravascular dyes, such as indocyanine green or methylene blue
•
defibrillation
Dysfunctional hemoglobins such as carboxyhemoglobin, methemoglobin,
and sulphemoglobin are unable to carry oxygen. SpO
appear normal; however, a patient may be hypoxic because less
hemoglobin is available to carry oxygen. Further assessment beyond
pulse oximetry is recommended.
