Configuring Advanced DTMF Settings

About this task
This section details the advanced configuration of DTMF, a method used to send messages to other
endpoints or network devices like gateways or MCUs. DTMF, or touch-tone, is the method of dialing
on touch-tone phones, where each number is translated and transmitted as an audio tone. The
DTMF format for a call is decided during call setup. There are several types of DTMF:
• Inband DTMF is the most basic form of DTMF, which transmits audio sounds within the audio
stream, heard by participants.
• Out-of-band DTMF transmits messages outside the audio band, and are only converted to
audio at the receiving end. H.323 has several methods of incorporating out-of-band DTMF:
- User Input Indication (UII) is part of the H.245 standard, used in H.323 calls only.
- RFC2833 is the standard method used in SIP calls. However, you have the option to use
this method in H.323 calls as well, provided both endpoints support the standard within H.
323.
